Hand Painted in Zambia – Self Initiated Project
This book is a visual journey through the vibrant and visually inspiring country of Zambia.
After receiving an invitation I couldn't refuse to Zambia, a beautiful country in southern Africa, I started thinking of projects I could put together. I quickly found out about the rich sign painting history throughout the country and decided to document and explore it.
The final outcome is a collection of interviews with painters I met on my travels, an essay on Zambian Visual Culture from Arden Stern and an interview with English Sign Writer Wayne Tanswell, who has a longstanding relationship with Zambia and Sign Painting. Alongside this are 160 pages of photographs documenting the signs, murals and the beauty of the region.
Lastly there are the amazing 'Zambia inspired' illustrations from Divya Scialo, who joined me on this trip. Again, a big thanks to everyone involved!
